Introduction to the Writing Samples page

This page offers a digital portfolio of some of my works from each of my disciplines. All of these are my own works and any images or information that is not my own has been cited in proper MLA format. I have included three sections, a section for my professional writing, a section for my technical writing, and a section for some of my literary analyses. In each section I list the titles of the documents I have made available as well as a short description of the document.

Each document can be viewed by clicking on the title.

Professional Writing Samples

The following documents are samples of my professional writing for TopDrawerSoccer.com. In each article I contacted a client and interviewed them regarding their soccer camp or soccer tournament. I then wrote an article featuring the client's camp/tournament that was published to the TopDrawerSoccer website. Click on the link below to be directed to the TopDrawerSoccer.com page featuring the articles I have written. Any document written by me will have my name in the tagline.

Technical Writing Samples

The following are samples of my technical writing. I have included a variety of documents which cover various technical writing styles and formats.

Xbox 360 User Manual

This user manual was written for an audience that is unfamiliar with gaming consoles. It covers the installation and set up of an Xbox 360 gaming console. All websites mentioned within the document are fake (with the exception of the Microsoft support site). I wrote the document as though it was for a company that had a fully functional website.

Proposal to Combine eReaders and Print Books

This proposal was written for a course I took in proposal writing. I have included it on this website to represent my ability to write a realistic proposal. All information, including the Barnes & Noble contact to whom the Proposal is addressed, is correct.

Proposal to Stop Global Warming

This proposal was written in order to be satirical. I wanted to challenge myself to write a satirical piece that still adhered to the correct structure and format of a proposal. The document is meant to address the problem of global warming, and although it is proposing a ridiculous solution I used a serious tone throughout the document.

Process Description

This document is meant to be a description of the process of building an electric guitar. Because it is meant for informational purposes only, I made a note on the front page of the document in order to clarify the document's purpose.

Sample Memo

This sample memo was written as an assignment for my technical writing class. In writing this memo, I attempted to format it so that the content would be clear and easy to understand. I used headings to distinguish between sections and to clarify my content. I also used a bulleted list in order to present my content in a quick and effective manner. I tried to make my content clear and concise and easily accessible.

Literary Analysis/Scholarly Writing Samples

The following are samples of my scholarly writing. I have included several different essays on various texts. I offer a brief abstract of what I am arguing in each essay below the title.

Jane Eyre and the Change from the Feminine to the Feminist

This essay won the CSULB Jaquith Scholarship award. My essay examines the style of Charlotte Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre, and argues that her novel can be read as a feminist bildungsroman. Her novel changes what is typically a masculine style and presents Jane as a character who does not adhere to the norms and standards of Victorian society.

Games and Exchanges Within Gawain and the Green Knight

In this essay, I examine the presence of games and exchanges within Gawain and the Green Knight. I argue that the way in which games and exchanges are interpreted as either comedic or serious directly influences the way in which Gawain's character development is read. I argue that the idea of games and exchanges is not meant to be comedic. Rather, it is meant to set up the final exchange between Gawain and the Green Knight (Bertilak) in which Gawain develops as a character by becoming aware of his flaws and choosing to acknowledge them.

Absence Makes the Argument Grow Stronger: Wordsworth and the Reality of Tintern Abbey

In this essay, I examine William Wordsworth's portrayal of the famous Tintern Abbey in his Tintern Abbey poem. I call attention to the way in which his poem selectively focuses on the natural landscape and avoids presenting the ugly reality of the abbey and how his omissions are significant.
